The region was populated for the first time around 700 BC with the ancient city of Dikaia situated close to the nowadays Fanari village. Dikaia, according to different references, has been established by sailors from either Thassos or Samos island who reached the Thracian Beach. According to Greek mythology, the city took its name by Dikaios, son of Poseidon. The region later became part of the Thracian Kingdom, while Diomides was king. The famous Mares of Diomides were four man-eating horses which Heracles stole in order to complete the 8th of his Twelve Labours. Some of the artifacts and structures discovered in Dikaia by archaeological excavation are a part of the ancient wall, a sepulchral column and part of the cemetery.
